Collection: Obi-Kimono cushion

The encounter with the magnificent Obis and Kimonos of Nishijin motivated Sari, the founder, to create an interior design brand combining Japanese heritage and French savoir-vivre. Today, our Obi-Kimono Cushion has become a flagship product of MAISON MIYABI.

The Obi is a belt used to tie the Kimono. These two elements are at the heart of Japanese culture, art, and heritage, and their origins date back to the Heian period (794-1185). In Japan, these pieces are often carefully preserved and passed down from generation to generation.

Each Obi pattern at MAISON MIYABI has a special meaning (the meaning of the patterns is explained on each product page) and constitutes a precious legacy passed down throughout its long history. These Obis now have a new mission: They will now embellish your home with their long history and family stories.

Our Obi-Kimono cushions are not mere decorative objects, but true artwork. Each cushion is handmade in our Parisian workshop, where we carefully select and cut patterns from authentic Japanese obi belts, which can measure up to 4 meters in length.

At MAISON MIYABI, we reinterpret these traditional Japanese works of art so that they blend perfectly with Western interiors. We invite you to discover our collection and add a unique Japanese touch to your home, creating a truly original space.

    What exactly is Obi ?

An "Obi" is a wide belt or sash worn with traditional Japanese
clothing such as kimono. It can be quite decorative and often features intricate designs or patterns.

MAISON MIYABI uses only the Fukuro Obis (袋帯), which is a richly decorated and ornate obi used for special occasions.

Their characteristics: Wide, often with patterns on both sides. It is richly knotted and decorated, giving a luxurious look.

Where does the Obi come from?

MAISON MIYABI sources all over Japan.

Most of our Obis are vintage Nishijin-ori from Kyoto. Nishijin-ori is a high-end silk weaving technique that requires a great deal of time and effort, as the pattern is created by intricately weaving the first dyed threads, rather than dyeing them after weaving. Nishijin's unique weaving technique has been passed down since the Heian period (794-1192), and the weavers are constantly striving to improve their creativity and expression.
