History of the motif:
The phoenix is a legendary bird from Chinese mythology: it is the leader of 36 species of winged animals and is said to appear only in a peaceful world ruled by a person endowed with divine virtues. This obi is entirely gold and embroidered with lotus flowers, representing paradise as depicted in Buddhism.
