What is Ukiyo-e?
Ukiyo-e (浮世絵), which literally means “pictures of the floating world,” is a Japanese term referring to a genre of popular prints and paintings that developed between the 17th and 19th centuries in Japan. This term reflects the spirit of the Edo period (1603–1868), a time characterized by a flourishing urban society and a certain loosening of traditional social codes. There are several famous artists, such as Hokusai KATSUSHIKA, Hiroshige UTAGAWA, Utamaro KITAGAWA, and SHARAKU.
