What is Ukiyo-e?
Ukiyo-e (浮世絵), which literally means “images of the floating world”, is a Japanese term for an artistic genre of popular prints and paintings that developed between the 17th and 19th centuries in Japan. The term reflects the spirit of the Edo period (1603-1868), a period characterized by a flourishing urban society and a certain loosening of traditional social codes. There are many famous artists such as Hokusai KATSUSHIKA, Hiroshige UTAGAWA, Utamaro KITAGAWA and SHARAKU.

The painter Utagawa Kuniyoshi is known as one of the most cat-loving artists in the world of Ukiyo-e. Temari is an acrobatic performance performed by kicking a ball with the foot. In this work, we can see some of the techniques involved in juggling a mari ball on their body.
The round shape of the ball has long been associated with parents' desire to see their children grow up healthy and well rounded. There is also a custom of giving the ball to the bride-to-be as a wedding gift, to pray for a happy life, such as family and marital happiness, and also because it has the meaning of “all will be well”.
